This is a really great post, and I hope lots of extroverts read it and think about it too! As a kid, I think I was an extrovert, but the older I get the more essential alone time and quiet is for me. I think I have qualities of both an introvert and an extrovert, if that's possible :)
I also think it's interesting to note that parents often want their children to be extroverts, maybe because they know the world was sort of "made for" them. I teach kindergarten and I am often amazed with how much parents will try to get me to help them make their child more outgoing... I always offer some tips to reduce shyness and become more comfortable but I also want them to see all the other strengths their child has because those can be even more important!

I'll let you know what I think of it. I'll probably start reading it today. :)

Thanks for the reassurance that it's possible to be an introvert and to keep your integrity in business! Wouldn't it be awesome if there were a business blog just for introverts? I think so many people would benefit!

That's the most interesting thing about introverts, and another one of my favorite quotes from author Susan Cain. In that article she was interviewed for, she was asked whether she was an introvert. Her answer: "Yes. People sometimes seem surprised when I say this, because I’m a pretty friendly person. This is one of the greatest misconceptions about introversion. We are not anti-social; we’re differently social. I can’t live without my family and close friends, but I also crave solitude. I feel incredibly lucky that my work as a writer affords me hours a day alone with my laptop. I also have a lot of other introvert characteristics, like thinking before I speak, disliking conflict, and concentrating easily."

Thanks for sharing, Danielle!

I am so glad that you are going to read Quiet! It's on my list, too. Please let me know what you think once you're done. I'm really intrigued by the positive side/psychology of it, too.

And trust me when I tell you that as an introverted business owner, I strive to never go against my core beliefs. I am a value-centered person by nature (yet another recent realization about myself!) and do not like to compromise when it comes to being someone I'm not or going against something I truly believe in. So that's my long way of saying that it is definitely possible!

You seriously rock, GC! I think it was hard for me to not come across as sounding bitter, too, but it really is about wanting to educate others and get it in people's minds that introverts have just as much to offer the world. Your Facebook post comments were so interesting. I think you handled them incredibly well and showed how informed you really are - major kudos to you!

I agree with everything you said about learning in school. It's so easy to think there's something wrong when you go against what everyone calls "the norm," but I think self-education is absolutely crucial in realizing and accepting how great we are. :) Thank you so much again for inspiring me and others with your dedication to doing just that! Love ya, lady!

I'm most definitely an introvert! I've always known it, but I didn't know how much the description fit until I read about your experiences -- because they're so close to mine.

I checked Quiet out of the library tonight, and I'm looking forward to reading it. I'll be excited to read about the benefits of being an introvert. Until recently, I'd only heard of the so-called negative side.

I'm especially interested in introverts as businesspeople because I'd love to have my own business, but without having to be someone I'm not or to go against core beliefs.

Amen! Thanks for all of the shout outs too! Sometimes I feel like I come off as bitter (probably a little true), or as "introverts, rule! Extroverts drool!", but really I think it is about educating others. If you noticed my facebook post, I had a lot of people commenting with really ignorant and OFF ideas about introversion. Besides the concepts of how we draw our energy and work best, I also like to inform people is that it isn't that introverts don't like to be social- we just like to be social in our own ways- blogging, online chatting, in an intimate setting, etc.

Also, I had very similar experiences in HS to what you described. Being called on unexpectedly was the worst! And it turned out, that was a period of my life that was really tough- on top dealing with entering a highly rigorous academic private HS, I immediately criticized myself for my introverted ways of digesting and processing information (aka how I LEARNED)- labeling it as "dumb", "slow", etc. Really, I was/am very meticulous with how I learn...and the bottom line is that I am the only that knows my pace. Taking ownership of introverted ME, and really self-education (reading books like "the Introvert Advantage, researching websites, etc.), helped me to gradually realize that there was/IS nothing WRONG with my wiring- I am just an introvert, and a MINORITY in that sense!

Thanks for the great post, Jenn!
